No matter how awe-inspiring your post is, you must work hard in two areas; it must be share-worthy, and it must be shareable.
When someone shares your post, they are putting their reputation on the line. He or she is coming out and saying, “Hey everyone, this is worth reading.”
It’s not enough that your article is unique and well-written. Six out of ten blog posts meet those criteria. Your work must be in the one-in-a-thousand category.
It must be useful and outstanding. Unique words are not enough – The IDEAS must be your own, though there must be authoritative links backing up your thinking.
A SocialBakers.com study shows that 93% of the most engaging Facebook posts had an image. You can’t argue with that if you want people to share your posts. Posts must include pictures and video clips even if you think the meat of your article is in the words.
If you want a blog post to spread like the flu virus on a jam-packed Boeing 737, you need to do so much more than putting social icons at the bottom of the page.
- It must have images
- It must have videos
- You need to make it simple to share
Images and videos need to be your own and branded. If you don’t have your own images, consider stock photos, but be VERY careful about licenses, or you can end up with compensation and lawyers’ bills for tens of thousands of dollars.
Any image service you use must guarantee the source of its pictures and hold model release forms for each one.
1. Write the article
Find your angle, one that works for the blog’s readers and your client if you are being paid to write the post. Make the content invaluable, say something unique (not just unique words, but one-off ideas), and make it a must-share piece, because to do anything less is selling everyone short.
2. Write a Title
Your title should make it clear what problem your article is addressing and must catch the reader’s eye on a Google search page.
3. Add title image
Add text to your photo using a program like Design Wizard.
Writer’s image
The title image goes below your title and makes the article more attractive when it is shared on social media.
4. Create perfectly sized social media images for your promotion campaigns
You can create perfectly-sized media for every channel using Design Wizard’s drag and drop interface in just a few minutes. Even the free version allows you to save your brand colors to a custom palette, so your promotional images are instantly recognizable.
Most image sharing plugins, even premium ones, have one big problem; they share the same picture regardless of the social media channel.
The Share This Image – Image Sharing Plugin is the exception. The video shows you how quickly you can set different size pictures to be shared depending on where the reader wants to share it, 1024 x 512 on Twitter, 1200 x 900 on Facebook, 1080 x 1080 on Instagram, etc.
You will need to upload each size photo to your site using the WordPress [Add Media] button.
6. Create Infographic from the article
People love infographics. Search Engine Journal puts Infographics at the top of its sharing media types.
You can use a service such as Easel.ly to create your own infographics using drag-and-drop elements and editable templates.
7. Publish the article on your site
Now you have your ducks all lined up; you can post the article on your site with a link to the infographic.
8. Post infographic on sharing sites
The point of infographics is to get more eyes on your article, so you must post it on sites that share this type of media. Most sites require registration, which is usually free, and links may be no-follow or limited to your name or the source URL. Start by looking at Visual.ly and Infographics Archive.
9. Create a slide deck using article images
Create slide decks from your infographic images on sites like SlideShare.net or HaikuDeck.com.
Edit your live article to include links to your slide decks.
Share your images using every channel and account you have access to. Remember to use the preferred image dimensions for each channel. Your image editing site should help you size your pictures quickly.
The Short Version
This is the age of short two-second attention spans, where images are the rule, so you have no option but to go visual, creating unique and branded images using your company colors. You then need to share those images far and wide. Free SaaS apps such as Design Wizard and Easel.ly allow you to generate branded graphics quickly and then turn them into slide decks and infographics that people love to share.
